Disadvantage for the incumbent or not?

The Hindu -
👉There is no correlation between voter turnout and incumbency👈 Conventional wisdom has always been that a higher voter turnout corresponds with a greater anti-incumbency effect in India. One of the many reasons noted in the loss of the UPA in the 2014 elections was the presence of a higher voter turnout in comparison to 2009. But in the last decade and a half, more incumbent governments have been re-elected even as voter turnout has risen. Is there any correlation between voter turnout and incumbency? In the U.S., there is a clear negative association between incumbency and turnout. One explanation for this is the competition effect — greater the competition in a bipolar election, higher the participation, which will include more dissatisfied voters. While the hypothesis of high partisanship in a bipolar political party system holds true for the U.S., it does not for India. Milan Vaishnav and Johnathan Guy in a paper titled ‘Does Higher Turnout Hurt Incumbents?’, publishe...

The changing terms of endearment

The Hindu -
👉The growing conflict between Dalits and Hindutva must be seen in the context of the paradigm shift in U.P. politics👈 Uttar Pradesh’s pivotal importance to Indian politics is hard to exaggerate. Anyone who wishes to rule India must control this State. The Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) biggest win in 2014 came from U.P., which was instrumental in providing Narendra Modi with a clear majority in the Lok Sabha. The party won 73 (with its ally) of the State’s 80 seats, while its nearest rivals, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress, got only five and two seats, respectively. The BJP repeated this performance in the 2017 Assembly election, winning 325 seats (with its ally) in the 403-member State Assembly, which is about 80% of the seats. No party has ever registered such a colossal tally, not even Indira Gandhi, whose party, the Congress, had won 309 seats in the then 425-member Assembly in 1980. 👉An alienation But barely a year after its stunning victory the situation...

Remembering and forgetting in Karnataka

The Hindu -
👉During the electoral campaign, historical figures have been plucked out of rich and complex contexts👈 History has been weaponised afresh in the electoral war zone of Karnataka. What set the ball rolling was the first idiomatic reference by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the historic face-off between Pulakeshin II (the great Chalukyan king) and Harshavardhana of Kanauj in the early seventh century, in which the former prevented the conquest from the north. Since then, we have been witness to a kind of deep mining of Karnataka history to serve two distinct purposes: reel in the votes of specific caste communities and construct a narrative of Hindutva unity. 👉All about Tipu In the last few weeks, historical figures have been plucked out of rich and complex contexts to be beaten into swords, flintlocks, arrows, or simply blunt objects with which to bludgeon the electoral opponent. Here, the favourite (and easiest) beating boy has, predictably, been Tipu Sultan (r. 1...
